What Counts as a Kosher Flip Phone

Two very different devices get sold under the same words, and the difference matters when a school or a rov asks what you are carrying.

A born kosher flip phone ships with a custom operating system that never had a browser or an app store in it. Fig builds its phones this way, and the Wonderphone arrives with kosher software already approved. Nothing has to be switched off because nothing was ever installed.

A koshered carrier flip phone is an ordinary basic phone, usually a Kyocera or an LG, that gets locked down after the fact. Our Kyocera stock is sold refurbished and unfiltered, and we configure it to talk only, talk and text, or talk, text and email before it ships. The LG Classic is set to talk only or talk and text at the order. It works, and for many buyers it is the right price, but the protection sits on top of the device rather than inside it. Our less restricted kosher phones collection is where those live, and our certified and TAG approved phones collection is where the vouched-for ones live.

Choosing Your Restriction Level

Most of the flips on this page can be set to more than one level, and the level is decided before the phone ships, not by the person holding it afterward. Pick the one that matches the standard you are keeping:

1.      Talk only. Calls in and out. No texting, no camera on the strictest builds, no data. This is the talk only tier.

2.      Talk and text. Calls plus SMS on a keypad. The most common choice for adults and for older teens. See talk and text.

3.      Talk, text and apps. Adds a fixed, approved app list such as Waze, weather, zmanim, smartlist and a siddur. Never a browser and never an app store. See phones with apps.

Tell us the level when you order and we build the phone to it. If you are buying for a student, check the school handbook first, because some Lakewood schools name the standard they accept.

Battery, Durability and Repair

Flip phones get bought for the same three practical reasons every time: the battery lasts, the phone survives being dropped, and the call sounds clear. The Wonderphone and the Kyocera line both use removable batteries, which means a worn battery is a $29 part rather than a new phone. The Kyocera DuraXV models add water resistance and hearing aid compatibility.

Repairs happen in our Lakewood store, and we sell the replacement batteries and cases for the phones we carry. That is worth knowing before you buy from an online-only seller, because a kosher phone cannot simply be handed to a mall repair kiosk without risking the configuration.

Do kosher flip phones have internet?

No. The flip phones on this page ship without a working browser. On the Fig and Wonder models the browser was never part of the operating system, so there is nothing to switch back on. The Kyocera models are sold refurbished and unfiltered, and we configure them to talk only, talk and text, or talk, text and email before they leave us.

Which kosher flip phone is best for a school student?

Schools generally ask for a talk only phone. The Fig Core Ani Choma at $169 is built to that standard, and the TCL Flip T408DL at $129 can be set to talk only. Check your school handbook before ordering, because some name the standard or the vendor they accept.

Can I keep my current phone number?

Yes. We submit the port when we activate the new line. Bring or send your current account number, PIN or password, the billing address and the account holder name. Ports are submitted during business hours and usually complete within a few hours, though the national porting center works weekdays only, so a Friday afternoon request can carry into Monday.

Do these phones still work now that 3G is off?

Yes. Every flip phone we sell is a 4G LTE handset activated on a current network, and we test the line before it leaves us. Older 3G CDMA flip phones stopped working when Verizon closed that network at the end of 2022, and those are not what we stock.

What is the cheapest kosher flip phone you sell?

The TCL Flip Kosher T408DL at $129. It is unlocked, has a 1850 mAh battery and a Hebrew keyboard, and can be configured to any of the three kosher levels. The Bliss is $99 when bought with a carrier plan, though its product page does not state a flip form factor.

Do you ship kosher flip phones outside New Jersey?

Yes. We ship nationwide and the phone arrives configured and activated. Local customers can also pick up at 209 2nd St in Lakewood.

Can I get a flip phone with a camera, or without one?

Both. Most models on this page include a camera, and several can be configured without camera access. Tell us which you need when you order and we set it before shipping.

Do you repair kosher flip phones?

Yes. Repairs are done at our Lakewood store, and we stock replacement batteries and cases for the models we sell. Bringing a kosher phone to a general repair shop can undo the configuration, so it is worth coming back to us.
