It does not mean an open phone. There is still no browser and no app store on the configured device, and we do not sell unlocked smartphones with a filter bolted on. What changes is who draws the line and how far out it goes.
Refurbished Carrier Phones We Configure
Our Kyocera stock is refurbished and, as sold, not filtered. That is stated on each product page and it is deliberate. These are ordinary rugged carrier flip phones that we then configure to talk only, talk and text, or talk, text and email before they ship.
They are the right buy for job sites and outdoor work, and the wrong buy for anyone who needs to hand a school an approval name. Kyocera has announced it is leaving the consumer phone business and continuing with corporate customers only, which is why this stock is refurbished rather than new. It is also why the batteries are worth stocking, and we sell them.

Who These Phones Suit
Tradesmen and contractors who need a phone that survives a drop into gravel and still needs to receive a work email. Business owners who need a hotspot but do not want a laptop with an open connection. Adults setting their own standard rather than a communal one.
They are not the right phone for a student. School handbooks in this area generally require talk only devices with a named standard, and a configurable phone with email is the opposite of that. For students, start at talk only.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these phones kosher?
They are configured to the boundary you set, and they ship without a browser or app store. What they do not carry is an outside approval seal from TAG, Vaad Hakehilos or a similar body. Our Kyocera product pages state that the devices are refurbished and not filtered as sold, and we configure them at your instruction.
Why do you sell unfiltered phones at all?
Because some customers want to set their own line, and because rugged carrier hardware is not available in a born kosher version. Being honest about it is better than putting a vague certified badge on a page. If you need an approved device, see certified and TAG approved phones.
Can I get email on a flip phone?
Yes. The Kyocera DuraXV and Cadence models can be configured for talk, text and email, which is the usual reason people choose them over a stricter handset.
Which phone gives me a hotspot?
The Kosher Qin F21 at $350 includes hotspot. It is also the model where we can build a custom app list rather than working from a fixed one.
Are the Kyocera phones new?
No. They are refurbished, and we say so on each listing. Kyocera has announced it is exiting the consumer phone business and serving corporate customers only, so new consumer stock is not being produced.
Do the Kyocera phones work on Verizon?
Yes. They are Verizon devices and pair with our Selectel Verizon plan at $15 a month. The E4811 and E4810 also offer AT&T H2O and T-Mobile options at checkout, while the E4610 and Cadence are Verizon only.
Can I ask for a specific app to be added?
On the Kosher Qin F21, yes, and that is what it is for. On locked born kosher devices such as Fig and Wonder, the app list is fixed by the manufacturer and we cannot change it.
Will a school accept one of these?
Generally no. Lakewood-area schools expect a talk only phone, often to a named standard. Buy from talk only kosher phones for a student.
